Easter is a Verb by Louise Wideman

My friend, Louise Wideman preached this sermon a few Easters back. It moved me. May you find some value living in this post-Lenten season.

“Easter is a Verb”
March 23, 2008

The adrenaline must have kicked into overdrive as the women ran to tell their friends what they discovered. Such a twist of events, a shock to their emotional systems. Unbelievable! Unexpected! Unthinkable! They had come to the tomb full of grief over the tragic death of their friend. They had come to pay their respects. They came that morning with sadness over the loss of a leader who brought promise of a new kingdom. The Jesus they had followed was now gone. Had he brought them this far only to leave them? They came that morning with fear about how they could ever get into the tomb that was sealed with a stone.
But the sight of the open tomb and the stone had been removed – and once inside, to find only bandages … and no body … and a voice telling them Jesus wasn’t there but was risen … Unbelievable! Unexpected! Unthinkable!
From sadness to terror to concern about what others would think about their news -- all within a short time frame --- quite a workout for their emotional landscape. That first Easter began as an occasion for fear, disbelief, and astonishment … and joy came eventually … but the joy came after the more understandable emotions of disbelief and incomprehension.
There were no trumpets that morning, no Easter lilies, no great congregational singing …the resurrection came in the early morning mist, while it was still too dark to see clearly. It came through weeping and weariness, through fear and confusion, and through the disorientation of grief.
And yet, in the midst of this emotional entanglement, these women bear witness to a great miracle – the unrelentless love of God that brings hope and points to life.
Such a wonderful story ---that we tell and retell every year. But thankfully the story doesn’t end there. Resurrection isn’t a one time event. The kingdom of God is among us – the living spirit of Christ continues to work – transforming, making all things new today.
In the last stanza of his work, The Wreck of the Deutschland, Gerard Manley Hopkins uses an interesting phrase, “Let him easter in us.” What’s interesting of course is the use of Easter as a verb. Easter would not have been for two thousand years the focus of Christian hope, if the word Easter were simply a noun, the name of something that once happened in the past. Easter, rather, is a verb. It happened. It happens. And it will happen.
Since that first Easter, there have been stories recounting the amazing power of God that goes beyond human understanding. Resurrection stories, stories that go beyond reason and logic, continue to happen in life repeatedly. On this Easter morning, we are reminded to proclaim those stories of hope that point to God’s grace and mercy and love – experienced in a variety of ways, at different times, in a myriad of situations. Sometimes these stories focus on physical healing.
But resurrection happens in our lives not only in physical ways. Jim Taylor, a favourite author of mine has said, “Resurrection happens anytime we are willing to let something old die – something harmful, negative, destructive. We let it die and we begin new life without it. We can’t predict what that life will be like – but if we are willing to take a risk, we will discover that we no longer need to fear whatever it was that died. And we share in the hope that Jesus made reality through his resurrection.”
I was leafing through a book called “Trancending” published in 2001 by Howard Zehr. Howard was one of the early pioneers in victim offender mediation and continues to be involved in this work. The book “Transcending” is a book about crime victims. The persons included have had extreme experiences that have shaken them to the core. Their responses are varied. They are all at different places on their journey. But one particularly moving story that I read comes from a Mennonite woman, Wilma Derkson, of Manitoba. I will read a few excerpts ….
We were an ordinary family with 3 kids. It was an ordinary day in 1984, payday, and 13 year old Candace didn’t come home from school. For six and one half weeks we looked for her. Then on January 17th, her body was found in a shack with her hands and her feet tied. She died of exposure. The police still haven’t shut the case and it is still on the unsolved mystery list. I saw it on TV just last week.
It changed our lives. We have a BC and an AC – before Candace and after Candace. But when I see her on TV, I don’t go into trauma anymore. She is still a part of our lives and I’m privileged that she’s still remembered.
Even though the killer has never been found, I think I experienced justice and that was a real surprise for me. Justice is, for the lack of better words, the healing of the soul.” Wilma goes on to describe the journey that she and her husband went through .. the feelings, her thoughts about forgiveness and anger. And then she writes,
“Entrenched in my Mennonite heritage is a commitment to peace. But I know now that I could kill. I now understand where that desire to kill comes from. What I found in myself revolutionized my ideas about what human beings are like. I had tremendous rage. But when I got in touch with my own violence, I also realized I didn’t want to perpetuate “an eye for an eye” because as the trite saying goes, everyone would be blind. It’s got to stop. That’s the mission of love – to be able to transcend our own hurts and create more love. Otherwise we’re going to continue the cycle of violence.
God looks totally different from this side of the murder. I have found that God look for good things to bless but he isn’t about controlling things. God understands the value of suffering, the value of allowing good and evil to live together. For awhile I went through a deep abyss in my faith; but now I not only see the suffering, I see God’s blessing too.”
A resurrection story of sorts that points to the amazing power of God that goes beyond human understanding. Since that first Easter, God has demonstrated over and over again that life is stronger than death. Today we celebrate resurrection hope … the foundation of our faith in God whose relentless love for the world brings us hope … Easter hope – a living hope to which we are called to share with a world consumed by despair. And while Jesus’ resurrection does not remove despair …. it means that despair is no longer the final word – hope is always present even if it feels far away.
And so today, we have move from out of the depths and celebrate God’s abundant love set free in the world ... to take the shattered pieces of our lives and help us arise to new life … This is our hope … this is good news … news that should stir us into action … We, like those early disciples are called to proclaim in word and deed the stories of God at work … of death and rebirth, of all the times we thought God had deserted us only to discover that God was finding us anew … those experiences of God’s transforming power that has brought about new hope, new direction, new purpose. How can we be silent, when we know our God is near, bringing light to those in darkness, to the worthless, endless worth? How can we be silent when we are the voice of Christ, speaking justice to the nations, breathing love to all the earth? Let us live as Easter people.

Good Friday

Not much more to say from me, except I've been thinking about my own call.

Would I? Could I? If I were called to crawl upon that cross, spread out my arms and let stakes be driven through them, would I be strong enough to fight my cowardice?

If I were asked to hang from my bones and skin, while my open wounds were picked at by flies and the buzzards loomed, could I resist the temptation to deny the very Being that created me?

If I had to walk away from everyone and everything I loved, in order to save millions I'd never meet, dare my selfish ways to take a back seat?

The good news? It's already done for me (to say nothing of the fact that I'm not worthy). It's been done for all of us.

Spend a minute. Watch the video. Lean into it and let your own spirit be stirred by what really happened one Friday all those years ago.....

Craft-Valentine's Day

I thought it would be fun to show some of the projects I've done over the last couple of months. [Actually they will probably be out of order, so it's up to you to save them to your memory bank for when you want to try something new].

My caveat.....I'm an amateur. Complete. I will also try ANYTHING. I mean, pretty much anything. Even if I know nothing about it. I'll give it a shot. Sometimes, I pull it off. Sometimes, not so much. Sometimes, I lose interest. Sometimes, I do more than I thought I'd was capable. And sometimes, well, I make it work.

In a future post, you'll learn some background as to how I got started in projects/crafts. [A little hint: my brothers-in-law refer to it as crap. Not craft. Does that help?]

Ok, back to my VD. I mean, not, MY, VD. Well, ok, it is MY VD. Well, to be honest, it's really the VD I shared with my BFF. Too much? You still reading? Ok, ok. Sorry. Here we go.

VD....Valentine's Day.

So, my BFF came for a weekend visit in January. A much needed weekend of hanging out, laughing, trying a fun restaurant, and giving a go at a few of the Pinterest items we've been putting on our shared board. [who knew you could share a board? My BFF did! That's who!]

We decided to work on a few VD themed items to create a VD Center for our mantels. Much to Kerry's delight, the Joann's Store Headquarters are located less than two miles from The Drayer. [I'm pretty sure Sweet Sarah and Kerry's husband, Mark, aren't as delighted as we are about this!]

So we headed out and got a bunch of supplies. What started out as one project, turned in to three. We actually had to finish two of the projects on our own after the weekend was over. Here's what we came up with....

Kerry, plotting our plan of attack

The beginning of our heart trees

A finished little heart tree. Only five more two go!

Mid-craft. Several things happening here. It's gettin' dangerous people!!!

The beggining of the wreath

Wooden letters drying

Ok, we have priorities!!! FOOD AND SANGRIAS!!!
We went to Paladar for dinner. Holy WOW I love that place!

Poor Sweet Sarah. She was pretty sick AND had to put up with Kerry and Me all weekend.

This is the finished product on my mantel. Isn't it cute?!!!

My People....

Sweet Sarah LOVES Duck Dynasty. She thinks it's hilarious. I keep telling her that it's really not that funny to me. Only because it's very close to my family.

Don't believe me?

See for yourself. These are my great-grandparents. And if you're not convinced....She wouldn't let us flush the toilet. Yep, pretty sure she coined the phrase..."if it's yellow, let it mellow...."

Happy Birthday, Dad

Today would've been my Dad's 64th birthday.
In case you're wondering, that's my attempt at growing out my hair. Yeah....not so much.
I wrote this on his first birthday after he died. Thought I'd share it again.

Today

Today I’m going to order Uncle Herschel’s country fried breakfast,
And keep the coffee coming.
And I’m going to read the paper and save the sports section for last.
I’ll make out the Tiger’s line-up on the back of an envelope, Lord knows Jim Leyland could use my help.

I’m going to take as many times as I need to, to make sure my tie is tied perfectly.
Wearing street clothes or a uniform properly is a matter of pride and respect.
Oh and don’t forget, I won’t loosen that tie until I’m completely done for the day.
And of course, I’m gonna fight crime today.
Psssshhhtttcchhhoooo.

Today I’m going to order a chocolate malt so thick I have to pinch my butt cheeks to get it through the straw.
If it’s nice out I might clean the garage and ferret away some more things before anyone notices.
Or I might play catch and make up a game of pickle, as long as I don’t have to run. But I could if I wanted to, because I’m cat like!
Have I told you I’d give me left arm to be ambidexterous?

On my way home, I may be forced to use the heat seeking missiles in my car because some boob cut me off.
And listening to George Jones as loud as I can get it, now that’s clean livin’.

For dinner I’m going to order something so greasy that it’d make a dog sick.
So greasy that when I pick it up the grease runs down my arm and I ain’t gonna apologize.
And then I’m going to sit in my chair, with my shoes half on. I like to bounce them around off the end of my feet while I’m thinking.
I’ll watch a little bit of the Tigers. And then when they tick me off, finish watching the second tape of Lonesome Dove.
Ol’ Augustus needs me after all.

Someone’s gotta do it.
Lord knows….most men couldn’t handle it.

Happy Birthday, Dad. We miss you!

He left this hidden in my planner in 1990. I still have the note.

Surprise Date Night #4

I nailed it. Yep, Sweet Sarah concurs!

Last night we had went on our fourth Surprise Date Night. And it was a LOT of fun!

I sent Sweet Sarah a text while I was in Chicago telling her Surprise Date Night was scheduled for Saturday Night.

The next day I sent her this text:

If this interaction doesn't typify our personalities!!!! [who's the risk taker here?]

Throughout the day yesterday I took every opportunity to build up the night and the plans. And, of course, Sweet Sarah took every opportunity to try and catch me in slipping up about our plans or the couple that was going to join us.

"Do these people even know what Surprise Date Night is?"

"What if I don't like these people?"

While Sweet Sarah was in the shower I dragged our golf clubs out of the basement and hauled them to the garage. [And, yes, it was 32 degrees and raining here yesterday!]

Just before 5pm our double date arrived. I had asked Sweet Sarah's parents, Jim and Judy to join us for the evening. They were very excited and played up the surprise to a tee! While we were sitting around enjoying some appetizers, Sweet Sarah (being not so sweet) subtly asked a few questions about what the plans were or "So what do you guys know about the evening?"

Once we loaded up and headed out I asked Sweet Sarah if she had any idea where we were headed. She was absolutely stumped. Thankfully we didn't have very far to go.

We arrived at Mac's Indoor Golf and Sweet Sarah was all at once shocked and super excited! We were going to play a round of golf on an indoor simulator. If you're a golfer and you've never tried this, I HIGHLY recommend it. It was great fun. And, given the fact, that it's been a year since I've swung a club, it was a great challenge too! [If you're not a golfer, but you love someone who is, this is the perfect unique gift. Tuck that away in your gift file and thank me later.]

Yikes! That form needs work...though I'm certain I drove it 200 yards!!! :)

My favorite M-I-L! Our gallery and beer cart girl!

Sweet Sarah, clearly disagrees with her lie [note her ball in the rough]

Jim is eyeing up his approach

Best picture of the night!

There are two important items to note in this picture. First, Sweet Sarah is killing us! Second, the very item that gave us the evening's running joke. When Mac asked Sarah to spell her name, this is what he heard. Thereafter, she was referred to as, "SAAAARRRRR---HAAAAAAAAA" [think LOUD and DEEP, finishing with a nice guttural.]

It took us an hour and a half to play seven holes. And since they charge by the hour, we called it quits and headed to On Tap for dinner.

Overall, Sweet Sarah ranks this as a two thumbs up. When I asked her if this was her favorite, she said she couldn't rank them against each other because they've all been so different. [I would like the record to show, however, that it does rank above the poor planning/no dinner arrangements SPD].

Virtual Cocktail Hour--Cosmopolitans!

Well, another successful Virtual Cocktail Hour!

In fact, this one was so good, I only took one picture!

The drinks were delish! It was a first for Sweet Sarah. [She suggested this be the regular drink each month!] For me, I like it so cold that there are ice crystals on top, which, of course, involves a lot of shaker shaking!!!!! We used a common recipe, but I substituted pomegranate-cranberry juice for the plain old cranberry.

As usual, we had a great time. Honestly, folks, facetime technology is simply ahhhh.may.zing!!!!!

Prior to Facetime, we saw Shelley and Robin once or twice a year. Now, seeing them once a month is just a blast! It doesn't hurt that there are tasty new drinks involved either.

If you're looking for a fun cabin fever sumthin' to do, plan a virtual cocktail hour with a friend you've been meaning to catch up....it'll be worth all of the calendar juggling. Trust me!

Look at those beautiful drinks!!!

Spann Principles

this greeted me in the women's room at OHare Airport. Perhaps the Worker must've forgotten the key that day. Yes, yes. That is a clear trash bag threaded through the roll. And given the size of the roll, I'd say the little invention would make Poppy Hurshell proud. (You see, this picture is the epitome of two VERY proud Spann principles--homegrown inventions and surplus toilet paper!)

I'd like a comment card to suggest a raise for this employee! Dedicated to serving her customers regardless of the obstacles!

This pretty much captures it....Do Not Be Ashamed.

If you've never read any of Rachel Held Evans's work, you are in for a treat. She is a strong voice in the theological world. I enjoy her writing-she challenges me to think differently and expects the same of herself.

Click the link to read her latest post. It's powerful. And go ahead and stay awhile. Explore. There's some good stuff there.

A note of Praise

Some lyrics rolling around in my head this morning.

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
[| From: http://www.elyrics.net |]

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
Lyrics from eLyrics.net

I love, love, love. LOVE when I hear a line or verse that strikes me. Today it's "No guilt in life, no fear in death, THIS is the power of Christ in me."

May you be drawn close this Lenten season.

Trendsetter

It appears Lebowski has been inspired by the First Lady. Upon returning from the groomer he has a fresh set of off-set bangs.

You go Lebowksi. You go! You.Are.the.Man!

Note the left side....no bangs.

Heavenly Pillows of Goodness

Holy Manna from Heaven!!!!

Ever since we enjoyed such a loverly dinner at Volare I have been jonesin' for Gnocchi. And not just any gnocchi. This needed to be good. Really good. Good enough that I wasn't completely disappointed and suffering from anticipated let-down because my flavor memory had different expectations.

I looked online at different recipes and I was never really convinced until I found The Grizzly Kitchen's post about this being a "go-to" recipe. As soon as I started reading, I knew this was the one. [My go-to recipe is probably Spinach Enchiladas. Though as I type this I'm not sure it's my go-to or it's just Sweet Sarah's most requested].

Nevertheless, last night we decided rather than eating out we'd give these little gems a shot. Gnocchi with Vodka Sauce. Sounds delish, no? [What I didn't think about was taking pictures throughout the process. Honestly, it wasn't until I started cutting the little pillows that I realized they were going to be perfect! So my apologies.]

All in all, this is not a complicated process. It is a bit lengthy however. From the time we put the potatoes in to bake to the time we sat down.....elapsed time probably two and half hours. Now, now, now. Don't give up on this recipe yet. An hour of that time was the oven doing the work baking the potatoes.

The other hour and half? Well, just plan ahead. Open a bottle of wine, prepare some appetizers and enjoy the cooking experience.

Sweet Sarah and I took the divide and conquer method. She made the sauce, I made the gnocchi. Both were restaurant worthy [no joke! If you doubt, feel free to Open Table a spot at The Drayer and place an order. teehee]

I'll let you peruse The Grizzly Kitchen's recipe. She gives some really good advice. I'll share the tweaks we made and then the pictures!

Tweaks:

  • We cleaned the contents of a 3 lb bag of potatoes and threw them into a roasting pan @ 400 degrees.
  • I mashed the potatoes by hand with a potato masher
  • Tomatoes, food processor, chopping step, etc: We totally kept this simple. We bought diced canned tomatoes. Eliminated the processor and chopping step. And threw the entire can in the pot.
  • The forking of the gnocchi. Nope. Didn't do that either. An extra step that is only for looks. [It's like criss-crossing peanut butter cookies with a fork. Just MASH those things down with a glass and move on people! No time for that.]

Pre-Vodka, pre-cream. Simmering for taste and depth. Yummy!

An up close look at the goodness. Note the glass of wine helping me along.

Three pounds of potatoes makes a LOT of Gnocchi.
We put one pan in the freezer, then in a zip-lock.
One pan served both of us plenty!

Sweet Sarah adding the cream. [Note the back of spoon technique. See Virtual Cocktail Hour for reference.]

And here it is. Beautiful.

Toss in some grilled chicken or a nice beautiful salmon filet and this little dish is a superstar!

Enjoy!
